5 Graphic Design Trend Predictions for 2019
2019 Potential Graphic Design Trends are Tireless
It's the beginning of 2019, time to assess what we're working with
Over the past few months, Iβve realized we are entering a new decade of design. Weβre leaving the era of ombre and entering color blocking, among many other things. I'm so excited.
Many times graphic design trends recycle over time, but on the rare and eventful occasion we get to introduce novel trends that sprout up from the creatives themselves. In 2019, I think we are going to see at least one new trend come to fruition. Check out what I think will be 5 trends for 2019 that will take us unto the next decade, and beyond.
Picaso Abstract Illustrations
These dissproportanate and beautiful representations of people are everywhere, and Iβm here for it. As our cultural understanding of the body has changed, so does the art we make. Women in particular are reinstating the new normal; every body is beautiful. Starting from modern feminist illustrators, who have reimagined inclusive design, the culture has scooped up this Picaso like look and ran with it. Even male artists like Andy J. Miller have created endless illustrations for YouTube, Warby Parker and Amazon with an iconic and playful look.
I predict 2019 will take common art to a whole other world, ruled by the abstract. We will be more relaxed, less strict and full of colorβwhich brings me to the next prediction.
Yellow and Gold
I think yellow and gold will take overβitβs taking over this blog post, even now. Boiling it down, I donβt think yellow itself will rule 2019 but renditions of the primary colors. I think red, blue and yellow in a color block style will harken back to the 60s over the next decade. We have now thrown away ombre, gradients, and a slow change of color to embark on a new color journey. Yellow will lead the way as we re-discover a fresh way to use the 1960s color blocking vibe. Itβs going to be epic.
2D, Jam Packed, Mural Art
As designers have been inundated with the media, tech and schedules so has our art. This is the newest trend that I think has popped up over the last decade and will make a full unveiling over the next year, and possibly take over the 2020s. We have created this jam packed style that really reminds me of nordic, African and Native textiles. Textiles and patterns have always been a functional creation to tell stories and restore vibrancy within cultures. I think this new jam packed style is no different. It redefines the new way we see the worldβoverwhelming. Maybe thatβs not a bad thing?
Mid-Century Retro Throwbacks
Itβs true, retro throwbacks have been around for a while; Iβm not crazy. But I think itβs here to stay. Paired with the vibrant color blocking and obsession we have with indoor plants; this is the new normal. We have recycled the love that the 1060/1970s, brought to us in our art, and I think we are only going to amplify this obsession in years to come. This year, we will only make it better and stronger, so it goes much, much longer.
Misaligned Typography
Some say type is the key to good design. When we can make that type THE design rather than part of the design we have entered 2019. I think this year we are going to stretch the boundaries of type and text, making sure emotions are felt first rather than information. Again, this is a throwback to the 2960/70s but I stand by my prediction. Emotions are taking over, in the best possible way.
